Artist Spotlight: Angie Conrad

In high school, Angie Conrad wanted to go into crime scene investigations. However, she says she was not good at the science side of it. She also did not have enough time during high school to take the photography class that was offered, but she did take various other art classes. During a commercial art class under Ms. Denise Delzeith at Concordia Lutheran High School, Conrad cultivated her interest in graphic design. She didn’t have enough time for photography in high school because she was a member of JROTC. Her father was one of the instructors in the program at CLHS, so Conrad grew up in a military family. Conrad and her brother are very close—so close in fact that he is working in the law enforcement field, which was what Conrad wanted to do before she became interested in graphic design and photography. When she began taking photography classes here at IPFW, she was slightly disappointed to find that it was all through digital cameras. The photography class offered at her high school taught the students the ins and outs of the cameras as well as how to process and develop the film.

Conrad is currently pursuing a double major in graphic design and photography. Because it’s a double major, it’s taking her five years to complete her college career. However, that means that she only has one year left. Conrad has already completed her internship in photography, working with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. She says she fell in love with the telephoto lens she purchased for the internship. She’s also currently designing the seasonal poster for the Mad Ants cheerleaders.

Conrad is fortunate enough to have a job that is related to one of her degrees. She works in the photo center at Wal-Mart. She has taken pictures of the staff for various reasons and has been able to dabble in painting. Her managers hired her to paint the logo on certain walls in a couple of the stores around the area. Conrad and a close friend also do various photography projects around town. Conrad has had the opportunity to do senior portraits as well as at least one wedding. While she admits it’s not much outside experience, she is happy that she is getting her name and work out for people to see.

Ideally, Conrad would like to have her own graphic design company someday, either in California or Chicago. She says that’s her “long-term goal.” When asked why she chose those two locations, she just smiled and said that she wanted to get out of Fort Wayne. She’ll be getting out of Fort Wayne sooner than she thinks—she’s going to go visit her brother in Japan soon. When reminded to bring her camera, she said, “Oh, I know, I will! I’m going to buy a ton of memory cards!”
