Baseball Takes One from Golden Eagles

Written by: Brice VanceApril 01, 2016

The IPFW baseball team broke its six-game losing streak March 25 when it beat Oral Roberts 6-3 in the series opener.

The Mastodons lost the final two games of the series to the Golden Eagles 2-5 and 0-15.

In the first game of the series, IPFW got its first two batters on base after back-to-back walks to open the game. Kendall Whitman doubled down the left-field line and brought Brandon Soat around and scored the first run of the game.

Mastodon starting pitcher Evan Miller shut down Oral Roberts forĀ  the majority of his start except for in the third inning.

Chase Stafford led off the inning for the Golden Eagles with a double. Then, Miller loaded the bases when he walked back-to-back batters.

Miller got in more trouble when Oral Roberts scored three runs when Brent Williams and Noah Cummings hit a single apiece to take the lead.

In the fifth inning, the Mastodons took the lead back off a Shane Trevino single to centerfield.

The IPFW lead was extended in the sixth when Evan VanSumeren hit a sacrifice fly to score Jonathan Reece. In the next at-bat, Soat stole second but the catcher got an error on his throw to second and that allowed Shannon Baker to score for the 6-3 lead.

The IPFW relievers, Jordan Martin and Jake Weber, shut out Oral Roberts for the rest of the game, and Weber earned his fourth save of the season when he sat down the Golden Eagles in order in the ninth.

Miller earned his third victory after his six innings of work.

IPFW dropped the final two games of the series when the Mastodons struggled to put runs on the board, scoring just two runs in the first game of the doubleheader, and were held scoreless in the final game.

IPFW played its first home game of the season March 29 against Goshen College and continues its league schedule in Kokomo, Indiana, April 1-3 versus South Dakota State.
