In a show of peace and goodwill, Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew prayed together in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchal Church of St. George in Istanbul. This represents one of the greatest peaceful events between Catholicism and Orthodoxy since the schism between the two faiths. The two leaders presented a unified front against the persecution of Christians in the Middle East. The joint statement expressed the desire for a meaningful dialogue with Islamic leaders as well as peace within the Ukraine region. Additionally, Vatican observers were invited to an upcoming historical event: an Ecumenical Council of the Orthodox bishops in 2016. This will be the first such council of this size in well over 1000 years.
