Out of 120 active IPFW student clubs and organizations, the Dancing Dons are the only club to combine dance, school spirit, competition and fun.

“I believe that our team is one of a kind,” said Anna Joo-Yung, the head coach for the 2016-17 season. “I would like to think that every member feels as though they can be themselves, and for that, I am proud of this team!”

The group specializes in jazz, hip-hop and lyrical dance. They perform at IPFW events and in the community.

Tryouts to join the Dancing Dons for the 2017-18 season will be held Aug. 29 and 31 in room 135 of the Dolnick Building on the Ivy Tech Campus. A pair of jazz shoes and tennis shoes, socks and comfortable clothing will be needed.

Students can expect to practice and learn two new routines (hip-hop and jazz) the first day and then review and perform those routines for the judges the second day.

Any IPFW student with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA is welcome to tryout, but previous dance experience is encouraged. If selected, participants must pay a $150 membership fee.

Once a member of the Dancing Dons, individuals can anticipate to attend two practices a week as well as occasional competitions and performances.

“We are here to allow high school graduates the opportunity to continue their passion for dance throughout their college years,” said Tanner Ely, club president and head coach for the upcoming 2017-18 season.

He said the dancers create friendships over the course of the year and really work well together as a team.

Joo-Yung, who personally struggles with diagnosed depression and anxiety, said joining the team has not only helped her grow in skill level but also build confidence and relieve stress.

“My role is to boost the students’ confidence in dance, teach them something new every week, guide them to be a better dancer and give them an opportunity to do what they love to do!” Ely said.

In addition to the tryouts, the club hopes to host a couple of technique nights over the summer, Ely said
