Director of Distance Learning Eric Vitz Passes Away at Age 42

Written by: Logan HurshNovember 07, 2014

Eric Vitz, director of Distance Learning, passed away Oct. 31 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne,

Earlier in the semester, Vitz had left his class due to external issues, but not much further explanation was given to students.

In an email sent out to the students of Vitz’s Intro to Communications class, it was confirmed that “an undiagnosed heart condition that had been causing other health complications for…a few months put Eric in the hospital on October 20. After a couple surgeries, this past Friday, Erica passed away.”

A GoFundMe account was made entitled “Support for Family of Eric Vitz” which appeared to have had a lot of support from friends and family who loved Vitz. In nine days, $14,476 was raised by 143 people.

The GoFundMePage explains that “On Monday, October 20, 2014, Eric was diagnosed with a defective heart valve that was infected and constantly pumping infection into his brain and other parts of his body.  As a result of this condition, Eric had suffered several tiny strokes and was at grave risk of suffering a huge stroke at any moment.”

Adam Dirkenson said in the email that Vitz was a “kind and thoughtful man.”

Vitz, 42, is survived by a wife and three daughters.
