Fans of freebies will want to note that Saturday, May 3 is Free Comic Book Day – a day when the aisles fill with cosplayers and comic store patrons can fuel their obsession for free.

While not every store that might sell comics is involved with this event, many stores across the country, including Fort Wayne businesses Books, Comics and Things (BCT); Clem’s Collectibles; and Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS), will be handing out free comics to everyone who walks into their stores.

According to BCT owner Tracy Scott, both major comic chains DC and Marvel plan special edition releases for the event. DC’s “The New 52 Future’s End,” will introduce a new storyline for the universe, and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” special release will create a comic book tie-in for their new film of the same name which is expected in August of this year. In total, there are 57 different titles being given out as part of the event, but not every title comes to every location.

In addition to free comics, many locations also offer other special activities, which may make traveling to several locations worth the effort.

BCT, which has participated in the festivities since they began in 2002, will offer a blood drive at their Maplecrest location – where participation will get you even more free comics – as well as a costume contest and a nerf-blasting range. Also in attendance will be members of the regional 501st Legion of stormtroopers to take part in the blasting range and sign autographs for fans.

Clem’s Collectibles, who will also be hosting members of the 501st Legion, offers patrons to their location a chance to meet several local comic artists as well. This year will feature Tim Baron, Courtney Hahn, Jeremy McFarren and Canaan White. From 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., this store will offer door prizes, sales on comics, a costume contest, snacks and demonstrations of new comic-based games, including Marvel Dice: Avengers Vs X-men in addition to free comics.

More information about these and other locations can be found online, and a list of all of the available comics to be distributed on May 3 can be found at FreeComicBookDay.com.
