The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Program, Wild Walkers, which meets the second and fourth Friday of each month, provides a chance to explore nature through hiking in a group setting. Wild Walkers is open to anyone over the age of 18.

“One hour on the trail for a college student can make you happier, healthier, more creative and grounded,” said Eden Lamb, outdoor recreation coordinator at the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department, “So, I see nature and hiking as being very beneficial for college students. I see it as being your outlet away from the world, technology and stress.”

Hikes led by Wild Walkers are usually an hour long. Hikes are scheduled throughout the entire year, offering people a regular opportunity to reconnect with the world around them and to get to know their natural surroundings.

“It’s a very welcoming adult hiking group. Sometimes, naturally, the group may split up on the trail, but they never leave anyone behind,” said Lamb, “What I enjoy most is they have a set schedule each year and you can explore northeast Indiana trails.”

You’re trying to figure out who you are going to be when you ‘grow up.’ This can be overwhelming, but nature can help,” said Lamb, “It can help slow us down, make us think, help us listen and be quiet, make us happier, and more creative.”
