Hindu Devotees Perform World’s Largest Sacrifice

From Nov. 28 to 30, thousands of animals were sacrificed in the Gadhimai temple in southern Nepal as part of a festival. These sacrifices included the ritual killing of over 5000 buffalo and the individual sacrifice of countless other, smaller animals like birds, rats, and livestock. This festival is an ancient tradition repeated every five years in the name of Gadhimai. Gadhimai is the Hindu goddess of power, and it is believed that sacrificing an animal to her will bring prosperity in the form of good luck and wishes coming true. As one would expect, animal rights activists are disgusted by the ceremony. In fact, many of the animals sacrificed are illegally brought from India. India’s Supreme Court even placed measures along the border to prevent the transport of livestock while this festival was in preparation or underway.  Even so, the rituals proceeded unabated at the temple.
