The IPFW hockey club finished the weekend with a 4-3 loss against Ball State after a 6-2 win against IU and a 5-4 win against Purdue in the ICHC Showcase.

Five minutes into the first period, Ball State managed to put one past IPFW goaltender, Nathan Pratt. Not even a minute later, IPFW right winger, Tyler Mason, scored off of a one-timer to tie the game. The remainder of the first period was a back-and-forth between zones with strong efforts from both teams, but no additional goals.

It wasn’t until nearly nine minutes into the second period that Ball State broke the tie for a 2-1 lead over IPFW. Ball State continued with a third goal four minutes later. IPFW center, Derek Moss, managed to deke past Ball State’s defenders and put one in the back of the net to bring the score within one, with 4:42 left in the period.  Ball State finished the period with one more goal to make the game 4-2 heading into the third period.

With a new goaltender in net for IPFW, Ball State couldn’t find another goal in the third period. Instead IPFW forward, Richard Sorenson, squeezed past Ball State defenders and managed a backhand goal to bring the game to 4-3 with five minutes left. The Mastodons couldn’t manage to tie the game despite a strong push in the closing minutes of the third.

The IPFW hockey club’s next home game is Friday, Oct. 24 against Northwood University at 8 p.m.
