On Nov. 6 and 7, the IPFW Hockey team beat Ball State in two games, one of which was determined in a shootout.

In the first game the Mastodons won 9-4; however, the second game got a little closer. After overtime, where none of the teams managed to score, a shootout took place where the Mastodons claimed the win 6-5.

The club team is in its 9th season and is playing in the ACHA division III conference together with Purdue, IU, Ball State and Xavier. The season finishes out with a conference championship, just like for an NCAA team. On top of that, they play in a broader league that any team can join, the Indiana Collegiate Hockey Conference.

This season the team is 5-4-1 after 10 games played. The scoring leader, according to Captain Derek Moss, is assistant captain Brendan Lewis with nine goals and 18 assists, is for a total of 27 points.

The club team is coached by Ron Lees, a former Komets player. The team has 19 players on the roster this year. Tryouts are usually held in the beginning of September each year.

The hockey team is heading to Michigan to face off against Northwood and returns home again on Nov. 20-21 to play Xavier in the SportONE Parkview Icehouse.
