FORT WAYNE – Professors and students from the IPFW Nursing Department hosted the Fall Festival on November 22nd and raised $1,576 to help fund a future gala that teaches students about working in the field.

About 50 students from two nursing classes organized the Fall Festival with the help of their instructor Rachel Ramsey, a clinical assistant professor at IPFW.

People of all ages from the community could come to the Fall Festival to get out of the cold, play games, eat food, and participate in a silent auction.

Some of the games available to play were corn hole, a sack race, a football toss, and a ring toss. People could buy tickets to play the games, get their face painted, paint a pumpkin, or get their pictures taken in a photo booth. The games and food sales raised $568 according to Ramsey.

The silent auction, however, raised $1,008 for the department. A large Purdue blanket and a Komet hockey night package, including tickets and gear, were some of the many items up for bid.

Jacob Shively, a junior nursing major, said the gala is “a way for nursing to show in the community.”

Shively said the department will invite “heads of nursing here or PRMC or surrounding areas to come to the area and tell us what they do, give nursing students a view of what’s going on, and developing the nursing field as well.”

Spenser Smith, a junior nursing major, said there is no set date or speaker for the future gala, but that it is determined by the students in the nursing program as well as staff and faculty of the nursing department.

Smith said the date will depend on availability of students and faculty that will help run the event.

Smith said the speakers at the galas are usually faculty and staff at IPFW or employees from Parkview or Lutheran Hospital. “They come and they share and give the students an idea of what they are getting themselves into,” Smith said.

Planning for the gala is not currently underway but IPFW nursing students will start the planning process early on in the 2015 spring semester.
