IPFW Men’s Basketball Team was picked to win the Summit League in this upcoming season.

The Mastodons received 450 votes and 13 first-place votes in a poll completed by league coaches, media members and SIDs, or Sports Information Directors. They received one more first-place vote than the next school, Denver.

First-Year Head Coach Jon Coffman is keeping it all business when it comes to talking with players on focusing on the season ahead.

“We talked about it a lot this summer, and we’re trying to maintain our edge,” Coffman said.

As well as being picked to win the Summit League this season, two of the Mastodons’ players have been selected to preseason All-League Teams. Senior, Steven Forbes and sophomore, Mo Evans, who was last year’s Summit League Sixth-Man of Year Award winner, were selected.

“He changes the game for us,” Coffman said on the impact of Forbes.

Evans is looking to take on a different role this year as other players have graduated and is expected to fill in one of those roles.

“He’s going to be playing a lot of point guard, so he’ll have to use his versatility which he has. We recruited him as a true point guard,” Coffman said.

There is a lot of hope for the team this season. The buzz on campus and in the community from the team’s near victory last year has a hope for a “hangover buzz,” as Coffman puts it, from last season to this season.

“There should be some excitement in the community because of it, and there is some positivity to it,” Coffman said.

IPFW’s SID, Bill Salyer, says being picked first might not be worth all the hype.

“There have been teams that have been picked first that have finished as far as seventh, and there are teams like, IPFW, that was picked sixth last year, that were a breath away from winning it,” Salyer said.

IPFW Men’s Basketball’s home opener is Nov. 14 at 7p.m. at the Gates Sports Center.
