IPFW faced Oral Roberts in a conference match at home this past weekend. Oral Roberts won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles giving them the doubles point, taking an early 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles looked fired up and ready to win singles as the matches ended.

“It was kind of disappointing thatwe lost doubles,” Senior Andres Cobos stated.

Going into single matches, Junior Gerard Guell said, “I was playing alright, but not mentally (in doubles), I had to pick up my level.”

The Mastodons built big leads in the beginning of the singles matches. No. 1 Guell and No. 2 Cobos both won singles, giving the Mastodons a 2-1 lead.

As soon as Guell took the lead in his match, fans could see his speed pick up and his emotions started showing more and more.

“When I finally broke him in the second set, to go 5-4 up, he made a few errors and I felt it, my momentum changed completely,” said Guell.

Oral Roberts won No. 3 singles, tying the match at 2. No. 4 and No. 5 spots were still playing their matches.

Assistant Coach Jonathan Bautello kept his emotions quiet watching both matches from the sidelines, standing still with his hat low on his head and arms crossed.

The Mastodons dominated at the end, winning the rest of the singles matches clenching the win 5-2. The win bringing IPFW’s overall record to 8-9 and 1-1 in Summit League play.

The Mastodons hit the court on Friday at home against, in-state opponent, Grace College, with the match beginning at 4 p.m.
