President Obama Delays Immigration Reform

Having previously promised to take action on immigration reform by the end of the summer, President Obama has pushed the promise back until after the November elections. This decision comes at the urging of Democrats who worry the timing of the bill would undermine both it and the Democratic Party. Unwilling to potentially sabotage Democrats in the elections and potentially create a more powerful Republican opposition, Obama is suffering criticism from Hispanic activists who have sought reform for years. With the earlier incidents of children being stopped at the border fresh in the minds of the public, the outrage is only growing. Even though political concerns have delayed the President’s promise to “act on his own” for immigration reform, officials have said that he still intends to act before the end of the year.
