The student senate approved 8-0 a bill to fund materials for the American Society of Civil Engineers group on campus.

The senate heard the bill Nov. 24, when the group came asking for $7,350 for materials such as concrete, steel, fasteners, straps and similar items to compete in the Great Lakes Regional Conference from April 17 to 19 at Notre Dame. The conference includes engineering challenges such as building a concrete canoe capable of floating on water.

In previous years, IPFW students have fought against larger, better-funded schools. IPFW has routinely beaten Purdue, for example. Without the materials, however, the group would be unable to compete.

“We have gotten some donations, but it’s not enough,” club president James Reitz said in his presentation.

The group has undertaken its own fundraising efforts, including t-shirt sales, working at restaurants and acquiring business donations.

The club now needs to appear before the Travel Committee to secure transportation to the conference.
