Three Percent of Swiss Population Believed to Eat Domestic Pets

Claims have been made that as many as 224,000 Swiss eat cats or dogs, roughly three percent of their population. However, this number has not yet been adequately backed up with hard data. Some analysts believe the number may reflect the number of people who have eaten cat or dog in their lifetime rather than those who eat them regularly. SOS Chats Noiraigue, an animal rights activist group, believes the number is correct and insists that rural communities have members who can readily recite their favorite cat recipes. A number of these indicate that they prefer to cook cat the same way as rabbit. The group has introduced a petition requiring 50,000 signatures to ban the consumption of cat meat in Switzerland, but so far has not acquired enough signatures.
