Ukraine Separatists Hold Illegal Elections

In a move that threatens to collapse the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire, the eastern Ukraine provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk controlled by separatists completed elections in their self-proclaimed “republics.” Western powers condemned these elections as illegal on the grounds of Russia’s instigation and encroachment upon the territories. Russia seems intent on using the elections as a pretext to intervene on behalf of the separatists despite the objections of the U.S., France and Germany. United Nations representatives fear the move will undermine the ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. Recent elections in the rest of Ukraine brought many officials to office on the promise of regaining lost territory, which is likely to require armed conflict.
