The IPFW men’s volleyball team split in its final two home matches of the season March 25 and 26.

The Mastodons swept the McKendree Bearcats on Friday night winning 25-23, 26-24 and 25-18.

In the first set, the first ten points combined featured six errors.

The Bearcats took an 11-7 lead after they scored four straight points, which lead to a timeout by head coach Ryan Perrotte.

IPFW slowly crept back into the set alternating points with McKendree until the Mastodons tied the score up at 22 after a kill by Alex Harthaller. The Bearcats then called a timeout.

After the timeout, IPFW scored the next three of four points, including a kill by Tony Price and two errors by McKendree.

In the second set, each team had a run of its own to keep the set close until the end.

McKendree took the early lead 8-7, and then IPFW rattled off four straight points, including two kills by Price and one by senior Andrew Sellan to take the 11-8 lead.

After the Mastodons took a 19-17 lead, the Bearcats tied it up after two quick kills by Wyatt Patterson. IPFW then took a necessary timeout to make sure the set didn’t get away from them.

The timeout, however, did not slow down the McKendree attack. The Bearcats scored the next points and Perrotte called another timeout.

The timeout calmed the nerves of IPFW. McKendree did not benefit from the timeout as the Bearcats gave away the next three points off errors.

The Mastodons  capitalized on their opponents’ mistakes for the remainder of the second set and took a 2-0 lead.

The third set was all IPFW, when they jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, which forced a timeout from the Bearcats.

The Mastodons kept the momentum on their side later in the set and took a 18-13 lead after a service ace by freshman Michael Keegan.

Frustration started to set in on the McKendree side of the net when a red card was issued to the Bearcats giving IPFW another point.

Kills by Sellan, Price and David Frazee completed the sweep for the Mastodons.

Sellan led the way for IPFW with 11 kills, while Keegan’s 31 assists was the 12th time he topped the 30 mark for assists in a match this season.

IPFW hosted #1 Ohio State for senior night but fell short in the final home game for Sellan, Frazee, Tyler Golsteyn, Luis Betran and Nick Smalter.

The Mastodons got on the scoreboard quickly when they scored the first three points of the match, which energized the team.

The Buckeyes then scored the next four points and took an early 4-3 lead.

Both teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the set until Ohio State took a two-point lead 24-22.

IPFW had a chance when the got the next point but the Buckeyes took the final point to take the first set.

The first kill for the Mastodons did not come until Kyle Fitzgerald got one for the seventh IPFW point in the set.

Tied at 17, the Buckeyes scored three straight points, which forced a Mastodon timeout.

After the timeout, three straight kills came off the hands of Sellan and Frazee tying the game at 20.

After trading the next two points, Ohio State committed two errors in a row and had to take a timeout. The ‘Dons had a chance to take the second set with a 24-22 lead but the Buckeyes then took the next five of six points to take the second set.

In the third set, IPFW was unable to take the lead after they fell behind early in the set and went on to drop the third set.

Sellan and Harthaller lead the way for the Mastodons with 11 kills apiece.

After a splitting the two matches from the weekend, IPFW moved into a tie with Lindenwood for eighth place in the conference standings. Only the top eight teams make the MIVA conference tournament.

There are only two weeks left in the regular season with four games left, and the Mastodons face Lindenwood, Quincy, Loyola and Lewis all on the road.
