The Fort Wayne Mastodons women’s volleyball team has won seven matches this season, and head coach Stephen Florio said the team is working hard in preparation for upcoming conference play.

So far this season, the Mastodons have won matches against schools including Toledo, IUPUI and Akron. Florio said the team is “looking pretty good among the league.”

The team will travel to Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., to compete in the Golden Grizzly Invitational on the weekend of Sept. 16. Florio said the conference represents a final chance to prepare before the team’s first conference game in Tulsa, Okla., against Oral Roberts. He also said that the invitational will be a great challenge and will get the team ready. Their first match will be against Towson, whose team is currently 11-0. After that, they’ll face Oakland and Kent State, which are both “strong teams.”

Florio said he has a pretty balanced team this season and has noticed some key players. Nicole Rightnowar has managed a streak of six double-doubles. Florio also said there have been some good contributions from freshman Sydney Boerst, who is currently ranked third in hitting percentage within the Summit League. Florio said that seniors Natalie Seiler and Lauren Hoffman have been doing well, along with the great setting abilities of Madison Jaqua and Tori Mills. Another steady component of the team Florio identified is Elizabeth Britner.

The next match will be against South Dakota at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in Gates Sports Center.
