IPFW women’s volleyball team traveled to Dayton, Ohio, on Sept. 5 and 6 to participate in the Flyer-Raider Invitational.

The first game resulted in a win for the Mastodons over Bakersfield Road Runners. The win made IPFW’s record 4-0, the first time since 2005.

Emily Spencer and Kendall Wienkes lead the Mastodons with 16 and 12 kills respectively. IPFW only trailed the Road Runners once in the opening set at 4-3. Three points in a row gave IPFW a lead that Bakersfield couldn’t catch up on.

Three aces from Wienkes gave the Mastodons an early lead in the second set. Bakersfield came back to tie the set at 12. IPFW scored twice to get out of the tie and eventually won the entire set.

Bakersfield took the lead in the third set but after a kill by Spencer, IPFW took the lead 16-15. Bakersfield then took over at 24-21, one more point would take the set, bringing the game to four sets. Two kills and back-to-back aces gave IPFW the third set and a win for the first night of the tourney.

In game two, IPFW broke their winning streak in the second game against Eastern Kentucky. The Mastodons more than doubled EKU in errors with 17 while EKU only had eight. Each set was extremely close (26-24, 25-23, 25-22).

In the second set, IPFW held a close lead but EKU scored enough to win by two. In the third set, leads went back and forth but EKU took the set and the game.

In game three, the Mastodons faced the Bowling Green State University Falcons.

In the first set, IPFW and BGSU tied at 13. IPFW scored the next two to get a lead and kept it to win the set, 25-19.

IPFW never lost the lead in the second set.

In the third set, BGSU scored more in the beginning until both teams tied at 15. IPFW scored the next five points and locked in a win as they held the five-point lead for the rest of the game and won 25-18.
